Frida script on the upper back

Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of the back of a person's neck and upper back, showing the word Frida in thin, joined black script at the base of the neck. A thin dark band encircles the neck above the lettering, and the person wears a light grey top with straps. The soft monochrome lighting and shallow focus keep attention on the lettering.

"Who are those for?" he asked. "The Hadley order. They want names on the tins." She had written Ada, Sol, Mrs Pinnock, each in the same thin, joined hand, the loops running into one another like a line of washing. He thought of his mother's recipe cards, the ink gone brown, and said nothing about how neat they were. Outside, a delivery van ground up the hill, and its headlamps swept the window once and left.

At six the sky over the car park turned the colour of dishwater. Frida wiped her hands on her apron and asked whether the bakery had ever had a name on the shutter. Tomasz said the old owner, Mr Ferris, had lettered it himself in 1978 and then left it to the weather, and later someone had painted over it grey. They went out with a bucket of cold water and a cloth, and under three coats of paint they found it, faint and joined, running in a shallow curve above the door: Frida.

She stood there a long time with the cloth dripping in her hand. "I'll leave it," she said. "Somebody should be able to read it." Tomasz unlocked the door, and the warm air came out to meet them, and behind them the first bus pulled in at the stop, its lights on in the dark.
