Butterfly and Faith script on the neck
Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a shaded butterfly with outstretched wings on the left, joined to the word Faith in flowing script on the right. A tapering swoosh with small star shapes sits beneath the lettering. The black and grey shading gives the wings depth, and the photograph is taken straight on from behind, with dark hair framing the top of the frame.

The road out of Sallow Wells ran straight for forty miles, and by the third night Tomas Reyes had stopped trusting his own eyes. The truck's lamps gave him a yard of grit and then nothing. The widow at the petrol hut had told him that the old road kept its own counsel after dark, and that a traveller who lost the white posts should switch off, sit tight, and wait for morning.

He did not stop. Somewhere past the dry lake a pale butterfly came to the windscreen, though no butterfly should have been out in that cold. It hung there with its wings open like a page, and when he slowed it drifted off to the left, trailing a fine smear of light the way a falling star leaves its line in a clear sky. Where the light faded, a handful of stars pricked out on the gravel, as if someone had scattered them to mark the edge.
He followed it for an hour. Each time he lost the trail, the butterfly came back and turned in the beam, and each time the ground under the wheels firmed up. The widow had also said the road was faith's work, not his, and he had laughed at her. Now he kept his hands loose on the wheel and let the thing lead him.
At first light the tyres found tarmac. The butterfly rose once above the bonnet and was gone into a sky the colour of ash. Tomas pulled onto the shoulder and sat until the sun cleared the ridge. Ahead, a white post stood where it should, and beside it someone had painted a single word on the rock in careful letters, with the star-dust settled round its base like frost.
