Fried eggs and bacon in a skillet

Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cast iron skillet holds two fried eggs with glossy orange yolks and a strip of bacon curled at the left edge. The pan has dark grey shading and a highlight along its rim, and the eggs and bacon use soft gradients to create a three-dimensional effect. The design fills the centre of the frame against bare skin and a blurred background.

The Tuesday the generator died, Dot Harrigan cooked breakfast for the whole of Marsh Lane by candlelight, and she did it in the one skillet she trusted, the black iron one her mother had left her with a crack down the handle. Nobody asked for eggs that morning. They came anyway, two of them, sliding in the spit of hot fat while the last bacon curled up at the edge like it was trying to leave the pan.

The Pritchard boys came first, stamping snow off their boots and complaining about the cold, then old Mr Ellery, who had not spoken to anyone since the funeral and who sat down at the counter without a word. Dot cracked the eggs with one hand, the way her mother had, and watched the yolks swell up orange and stubborn. Somebody had to keep the place going. Somebody had to make the yolks stay whole.

When the power came back at six, the bulbs flickered on over an empty room and a row of clean plates. Mr Ellery had left a pound note under the pan. Dot pocketed it, scraped the skillet, and put it back on the hook where it belonged, still warm enough to hiss when the last drop of grease touched it.
