Frying pan with bacon and eggs on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A frying pan sits in the centre of the design, holding two fried eggs with glossy orange yolks and three rashers of bacon in red and pink tones. The pan has dark grey shading and a highlight along its rim, with the handle extending to the right. The tattoo is shown in a close, angled photo on a pale forearm against a blurred indoor background.

Above the village of Sallow Ford the walls of Crane Keep still stood, though the roof had gone the winter the bell fell. Nobody lived there but the jackdaws and old Ruth Pennock, who had been cook to the last lord and would not leave his kitchen. She kept one iron pan, black as a coal scuttle, with a handle as long as a man's arm, and she polished it with sand every morning whether or not there was anything to put in it.

When the Marrow men came over the ridge with their banners, they found the gate barred and the well dry. They sat down in the bracken to starve the place out. Ruth had four eggs, a side of bacon hanging in the smoke-hole, and a speckled hen that had not yet decided to stop laying. She made her breakfast in the open court, where the wind could carry the smell down the hill.
By the third morning a young captain of the Marrow men had climbed the path alone, his helmet under his arm. He asked what the smell was. Ruth told him it was the last breakfast of Crane Keep, and that he might have half if he could show her his hands were clean. He was ashamed to find they were not, so she gave him the handle to hold while she turned the eggs, and the rashers spat between them until neither could remember which side had started the war.
They say the gate was never mended. Ruth's pan hangs on the broken hinge still, and the people of Sallow Ford say that on a still morning you can smell bacon from the ridge, and that anyone who climbs up to look will find two plates set out on the wall and nobody there to eat from them.
