Fry in a spacesuit on a forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon character with orange hair and a wide-eyed expression sits inside a clear bubble helmet, wearing a blue spacesuit and holding a grey and blue controller. The bold black outlines and smooth colour shading give it a clean, illustrative look. The design wraps around the arm, with an orange ring and a blue backdrop framing the figure.

At ten past three the ward goes quiet in a particular way, the drip pumps clicking over like a slow metronome, and that's when Kofi asked me to find the helmet. He'd been in bed for nine nights, his mum had gone home to sleep, and the only thing he wanted was the old fancy-dress spacesuit his cousin had left in the day room cupboard. I found it under a stack of linen bags and a tangle of Christmas tinsel, the bubble visor scratched but whole.

He pulled it over his head and the plastic fogged with his breath. "I'm going to fall off the planet," he said, and grabbed the controller from the bedside locker, grey and blue, its wire knotted round the bed rail. He played with his tongue poked out, the way you do when you're nine and furious at a racing game. Every time he lost a lap he rapped the handset on his knee and the helmet bobbed.

Around four the monitor over bed six started its low complaint, and when I came back Kofi had fallen asleep with the helmet tipped sideways, one thumb still resting on the joystick, the screen frozen on a finish line he'd never crossed. I nearly woke him. Instead I unhooked the wire from the rail, folded the controller into his hand, and sat on the plastic chair to keep the night company.

At seven the day shift came in loud with trolleys and tea. Sister Okafor asked what the spacesuit was for. "He's touring the galaxy," I said, and she laughed, and we didn't tell her he'd won the race.
