Cartoon old man and green turtle on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a hunched, yellow-skinned cartoon character with thin grey hair, glasses and a cardigan, reaching forward towards a green turtle with a toothy grin. The design uses heavy black outlines with flat, solid fills in orange, yellow, grey and green, with smooth shading on the turtle's shell. The two figures sit on the skin with the character filling the left side and the turtle placed lower right, against a plain background of skin and white fabric.

Keep that turtle off the weighbridge, Mr Hebden kept saying, but the creature had already crawled up the ramp of the lorry and was sitting on our customs seal like it had paid the duty itself. I am seventy-three years old and have crossed four borders on foot, so I know a stubborn animal when I see one. This one had a grin on it that would frighten a bailiff.

I went down on one knee on the wet tarmac, my good cardigan pulling at the elbows, and held out my hand the way my father taught me to coax a stray dog. Slow, slow. You do not chase a turtle. You let it decide you are worth the trouble. The guard in the booth had his sandwiches open and his radio turned up, and he did not look up once. Mr Hebden was shouting something in Polish, and the wind took most of it off toward the hills.
The turtle considered my hand for a long minute. Then it looked at me the way a schoolteacher looks at a boy who has finally said the right answer, and it set off, not toward me but past me, under the barrier, straight through the gate that was meant for people like me. Nobody stopped it. The guard, who had seen a great deal in his life, leaned out, stamped the little green shell with his rubber stamp, and waved it on into the next country.
I stayed on my knee with my hand still out, which I suppose is how you know you are old. Sixty years I have carried papers across lines, and nobody ever stamped me once. Still, the turtle got through, and that is a kind of paperwork I am happy to have seen.
