Brother Oswin asks me to tell you that the chapel roof is not on fire, though the light coming through the north window this morning would have suggested otherwise. I write from the cellar steps, where I am hiding from our visitor, who has been in the scriptorium since Lauds reciting something about dimensions and asking after the Prior's reading glasses.

He arrived on Tuesday with a grey, spiked crown of hair like a thistle that had lost an argument, and a squat metal gun he waves about as if it were a censer. On Wednesday he pointed it at the bell wall and a ring of rainbow light opened there, wide enough for a goat. Out of it came a cluster of pink crystals which he insisted were worth more than the abbey's whole debt to the wine merchant. Brother Oswin fainted into the herb beds. The goat did not come back, and I have decided not to ask.

The visitor's bottle, the one with the crossed X on its label, is in the refectory now. Brother Gervase has tasted it twice and sworn it is the finest thing brewed in this valley since the day we first hung the vats. I have asked him to stop. He says he is only trying to understand the recipe. I fear the recipe is now sitting in the rainbow, humming.

Please send someone with a stout pair of hands and a blessing. And if you see the goat, tell it the bell wall is shut.
