Galaxy eye cover-up on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The left panel shows a blue linework sketch of an open eye over a faded, greyish-green tattoo of a bird with a snake. The right panel shows the finished piece: a realistic blue-irised eye with lashes set against a soft, shaded galaxy of purple, green and pink nebula with scattered stars. The two images are placed side by side on the same upper arm to show the transformation.

Mabel Tasker lit the gas lamps along Quayside Row for thirty-one years, and she kept one rule: never look up while the mantle was catching. Watch the flint, the wick and the step. The sky was for the men who were paid to be surprised by it.

The tinker came through on the first frost with a crow in a wire cage, half its feathers gone and a green snake painted on the cage door. He wanted the bridge lamp left burning until dawn. Mabel said no, and he laughed and said he would pay in the only coin he carried. He would give her an eye, a good one, and all she had to do was look up once with it.
She agreed, because it was cold and he was tired and she was curious. She lifted her face. The sky opened above the chimneys like a pupil widening, purple clouds bruised with green, pink fire caught in the dust, and stars spilling out of it like sparks off a struck flint. Something blue and wet settled in the middle of her ribs and began to blink.
Every night after that she lit the lamps with one eye on the wick and one on the heavens, and the Row said she was touched. The children took to standing on the bridge with their heads back, waiting for the blue thing to open in the sky. When Mabel died the lamplighter's boy took her ladder. On foggy nights the children still say the eye is up there, and if you stand very still at the rail, it will look back down at you.
