Galaxy ringed planet on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A ringed planet, similar to Saturn, sits on the inner forearm and is filled with purple, pink and blue speckled detail suggesting a galaxy. The rings are outlined in blue and shaded with lighter and darker tones, giving a soft, layered look. The arm is shown against a black leather chair and a tiled floor, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

At three in the morning Ward 9 breathes in short, careful pulls, and Ruth Okonedo is the only one awake enough to notice when Tomasz in bay four stops pretending to sleep. He has his face turned to the window, where the car park lights smear orange across the glass. "Is that Saturn?" he asks. "It's a plane," she says, "but I know what you mean."

She sits on the edge of the chair with the clipboard on her knee and tells him what she knows, which is not much: rings of ice and dust, a planet so light it would float if anyone could find a bath big enough. He wants to know the colour. She tells him it depends on what you believe, and he decides it should be purple, the purple of the cleaner's dressing gown on Tuesdays, with pink for the sweets on the trolley and blue for the sea he has never seen from Hull.
He draws it on the back of a menu card with a chewed biro, the rings first, then filling the globe with dots of colour until it looks like a bruise of sky. "It's got stars in it," he says. "Those are the ones inside, so you don't get lost." When her bleep goes off at four she folds the card into her lanyard pocket without looking at it properly.
At seven the bed in bay four is stripped, and there is nothing on the bedside table but a plastic cup. On the bus home she takes the card out and holds it up against the window, where the sun is coming up behind the tower blocks. The rings catch the light first, then the purple, and she keeps it there until the bus turns the corner and the glass goes white.
