Geometric origami bird on the inner forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of a faceted origami-style bird sits on the inner forearm, with angular panels outlined in thin black linework. The panels are filled with soft gradients of purple, pink, red, yellow and green, with a few fine dots of colour trailing off to the right. The tattoo is placed centrally on a plain, lightly lit arm against a grey sleeve.

Nell had folded the same bird eleven times before the kettle clicked off, and each attempt ended with a crease in the wrong place and a wing that sagged like wet bread. Her father had never shaken over paper. He could fold a crane from a supermarket receipt while the till girl waited. The sheet in front of her was a square from a pack of watercolour paper, one side violet, the other faded to the green of a pond.

"You're pressing the valley folds too hard," said Mrs Adeyemi from the next table, not looking up from her own tangle of blue. "Paper's not a fist." Nell laughed despite herself. Outside, rain came sideways down Hallam Road, and the radiator ticked as if it were counting. She flattened the paper with the side of her palm and tried again, slower, letting each panel decide where it wanted to go.
By nine the bird stood on the table, its facets blurred where her thumbs had smudged the pigment. Red bled into the lower wing from a corner she had not meant to dampen. Mrs Adeyemi lifted it, turned it under the lamp, and said it looked as if it had been dipped in a sunset and then regretted it.
Nell took it home and set it on the windowsill above the sink, beside her father's chipped cup. In the morning the light came through the violet panel and threw a small wing of colour across the tiles. She left it there for a week, until the flat smelled of toast and the bird no longer looked like a mistake.
