Galaxy triangle with knotwork on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A large black-outlined triangle is filled with a blue, purple and pink galaxy or nebula effect, with stylised black lettering on the left side. Interlaced knotwork shapes sit at the top and bottom, and a black ring on the right holds a small fern-like leaf. The design is shown in a close, slightly angled photo against a plain pale arm and a dark background.

Mags, the hatch seal on Orchard Deck finally held, so you can stop worrying about me drifting out into the dark. Mum would have hated the racket the pumps made all night, but I sat up with cold coffee and the brass sextant you gave me, and I watched the nebula come round the observation glass like a slow bruise.

The charter says every crew member carries the mark of the Halden house, a triangle for the three decks with the galaxy inside it for the thing we are all really travelling through. The knots at the points are the old binding signs from the seed ships, the ones nobody teaches any more. The leaf in the ring is a fern from the vault, the last one that grew true before the blight. Dad wore his for thirty years, and I always thought the ring looked like a door.
Here is the thing I haven't told anyone. Yesterday the navigation board showed a fourth bearing where the old chart has nothing at all, and the stubby cipher on the left, which we took for a crew joke, spelled out a coordinate when I read it backwards. I checked it three times. It points to a place the charter calls the Quiet Reach, which Dad always said was only a story for children.
I have sent the bearing to the bridge log under my own name. If they laugh, I will laugh with them. If they don't, come home by the spring burn and bring the good sextant, because I think the ship has been trying to tell us where we are going for a long time, and I would rather hear it from you than from the dark.
