Galaxy silhouette in ornate frame on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A white profile silhouette sits inside an oval black ornate frame with scrolling filigree and a heart-shaped base. The silhouette's background is filled with swirling pink, purple and blue galaxy shading with small white stars, contrasting with the bold black outline. A small dark script tattoo is visible on the wrist, and the frame sits on the outer thigh.

Her father carved the frame from a piece of black bog oak the summer the Mercy went out past the Skerries, and he carved it badly on one side, so the scrolls never quite matched. Inside it he set a sliver of mirror, and when the lamp was lit in the cabin the mirror gave back a sky that was not there. Hannah wore it on a cord under her collar for eleven months, through the calms off the Cape and the three weeks of fog that kept the men from their dinners.

The mate, Aske, said it was a portrait of someone. Hannah said it was a window. She had found, on the second night out of Valparaiso, that if she held it to the dark sea and turned it slowly, the pale profile in the middle would tilt its chin up as if counting something. Aske did not believe this. He stood at the rail every night after that with his hat in his hands.
Off the Horn in March, the ship lost her foremast and nine men to the water, and the captain would have turned her back if the wind had let him. Hannah sat up with the injured in the galley and held the cameo over each face in turn. Nobody asked her to. She only needed something to do with her hands that was not prayer.
They raised the Falklands six weeks late. Her father's frame went back on its nail in the chandler's shop at Whitby, and the mirror inside was cracked clean across the galaxy, where the stars had been thickest.
