Galaxy wolf head on upper arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A wolf's head facing forward fills the upper arm, with the eyes, nose and ears in dark outline and shading. The fur and background blend into blue, violet and magenta washes that suggest a night sky, with small white sparkles scattered around the head. The photo is taken at an angle against a dark sleeve and a tiled floor, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf came down off the ridge the night the bell at Harrowmere cracked, and you were the only one still inside the keep to see it. You stood on the broken lip of the north tower with a lantern gone cold in your fist, listening to the nettles shift in the old courtyard below. Nobody had walked those flagstones since the roof was stripped for lead, and nobody had seen a living thing cross them in forty years.

It stopped under the arch where the portcullis used to hang and lifted its head. Its fur was not grey at all. It was the deep blue of the hour after sunset, violet at the flanks, and where the moon should have been there was only a scatter of white points, as if someone had flicked chalk across the dark and missed nothing. Your grandmother used to say the castle had once fenced the sky in, and that the wolves of the valley kept the gaps mended. You had always thought it a story for shutting the shutters on.

The wolf looked up at you with eyes like two cold coins of light and waited. You understood then what it wanted. You struck the last match in your coat, lit the lantern, and lowered it on its cord over the parapet. The wolf rose on its hind legs, took the cord gently in its teeth and drew the light down into its chest, where it burned a moment like a star being born, then went out.

When the village woke, the bell hung silent and the sky was thick with stars that nobody could remember seeing so clearly. You came down the tower stairs with your hands empty and found a single white sparkle caught in the wool of your sleeve. It would not brush off. It sat there all morning, cold as frost, and it was still there when the sun came up over the ridge.
