Howling wolf and moon on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A wolf with its head tilted back, howling towards a large circular moon. The wolf is shaded in greys and black, with soft detail in the fur. Loose watercolour splashes in pink, blue, purple and green surround the moon and the wolf, and the tattoo is centred on the forearm against plain skin.

The moon came up over the swell at four bells, fat and pale, and for once the sea didn't look like grey steel. It looked like someone had dropped a paint tin across the water, pink and blue bleeding into green where the spray caught the light. You had the middle watch on the Ellen Ruth, four days out of Montevideo with a hold full of tinned peaches and nobody to talk to but the helmsman, who had been Norwegian for forty years and never once said anything he didn't mean.

Halvard came up the ladder at half past, hands in his pockets, and stood beside you at the rail without saying good evening. He told you his grandmother used to say a sailor who heard a wolf on a moonlit night would never drown, because the wolf had already sung for him and the sea had no claim left. You asked whether she had ever been to sea. He said she had married one, which he seemed to think was the same thing.
Then Nell, the ship's grey lurcher, who had no business being above deck after dark, padded up the ladder and sat between your boots. She lifted her long head, tilted it back towards that great round moon, and howled, low and cracked and entirely certain. Halvard laughed, then stopped laughing, and you saw him take his cap off and hold it against his chest.
You didn't answer her. You just watched the wake glow pink behind the stern, the moon laid out on the water like something you could walk across if you were brave enough, and for the rest of the watch neither of you spoke at all.
