Wolf and crescent moon on a forearm
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A wolf's head fills the upper part of the design, with its face split between soft grey pencil-like shading on the left and loose watercolour washes in teal, green, pink and orange on the right. Dark splatter marks and sketchy strokes extend around the edges, and a small black crescent moon with ink splatter sits below the muzzle. The photograph shows the tattoo close up on a forearm against a shiny metal surface.

Sit closer, the lamp's failing and I'll not shout over this rain. You want the wolf? Everyone wants the wolf. For forty years the Vesper Brothers' Travelling Circus carried her from Hull to Penzance, and half the county still swears she was a dog with a painted face.

Half of her was grey as a February sky. That was the side Vesper liked, the side that sold tickets. The other half belonged to Teodor the clown, who lost his wife to a fever in Carlisle and found he could only keep his hands steady with a brush in them. Every night he dipped into the pots left over from the ghost train and painted her right flank: teal for the river at home, green for the moss on the caravan steps, pink for the cheap sweets his wife used to sell, orange for the fire they sat round. The wolf never minded. She stood as still for him as a horse at a forge.
Then came the season the money ran out. Vesper meant to sell her to a man with a private collection in Lincolnshire. The night before the auction, Teodor hung the old tin crescent from the sideshow over the centre pole, sat down in the sawdust, and talked to her in the voice he kept for children. She lifted her head and howled, and the whole field answered from the caravans, every dog and donkey and sleeping man.
Vesper heard it and cancelled the sale by morning. Teodor says the paint did it, that colour can remind a creature what it is. I say she only wanted her moon back. Go on, get some sleep. The rain's stopping, and if you look out there you'll see her, still wet and still bright on one side, walking off across the stubble towards the sea.
