Stretching cat outline on an ankle
Fine line · Calf · Mixed · Photo
A black fine line outline of a cat stretched out with its tail raised runs from the calf down over the ankle and onto the top of the foot. Soft splashes of blue, pink and green ink sit along the lines and a small multicoloured bloom sits near the outer foot. The image is a close, well lit side view against a plain light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The cat had been stretched across the hall runner since breakfast, long and pale and entirely unbothered, and by the time you came down the stairs with the blue tin under one arm, Mrs Pellow had already decided it was your fault. 'Admiral does what he likes in this house,' she said, 'and you'll not shift him for a paint pot.' You had been hired to freshen the front parlour before the summer lets opened on Saturday. Nobody had mentioned the cat.

By noon the parlour walls were the colour of a clear sky over the harbour, and the cat had come to watch. He sat on the windowsill with his tail up like a question mark and, each time you lifted the brush, he rose, arched his back and reached one long leg toward the drips. You told him no. He stretched further. When you turned to fetch the rag, the pink tin went over, then the green, and by the time you had righted them Admiral was halfway up the stairs, leaving a trail of bright prints to the attic door.
Mrs Pellow found you on your knees with a sponge and hands full of colour. She did not shout. She simply looked up the staircase, where a lodger's door had opened, and said that the Whitcombes in number four wanted to know whether the cat had taken up painting. You followed the prints down the step and out onto the harbour wall, where they stopped at the very edge, as if the cat had stretched one last time and let himself lie down on the wind.
That evening the parlour dried a shade of blue that matched nothing on the card. Admiral came back at dusk and slept in the middle of the rug with his legs out, pink at the paw and green at the tip of his tail, as though he had painted the whole room himself and was only waiting to be paid.
