Black cat with rainbow paw prints on forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a cat walking to the right sits on the forearm, with a curved tail raised. A trail of small paw prints runs to its left, each print in a different colour including pink, purple, blue, green, orange, red and black. The skin is pale and the plain background is a dark knitted fabric, with the cat placed at the right of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The dye works at Calder Bottom had been shut since the Michaelmas flood, so nobody expected anything to be moving in the drying loft except rats. Edie Hartley climbed the ladder anyway, lantern in one hand, and found a black cat sitting on the lip of the madder vat as though someone had hired it to guard the place.

It stepped down onto the wet boards and began to walk, unhurried, towards the far wall. Where its feet touched the floor they left prints. The first was violet from the indigo tub, then blue, then green from the weld, orange from the madder, and red from the cochineal that had been spilt by her father the year before he died. Last of all came a print as black as the cat's own coat, because it had come in through the soot pit on its way.

Edie followed it down the stairs and out through the yard, scrubbing at the prints with her sleeve as she went. They would not come off. They dried as hard as enamel, bright as the day they were made, and the cat walked on past the weir and up the lane towards the moor without once looking back to see if she was still there.

In the morning the whole village woke to a rainbow path climbing the hill in a line as neat as stitching. Edie cut out the green print with a penknife and kept it in a jam jar on her windowsill, and she never did find out where the cat had been going, only that it had known the way.
