Geometric bear heads on two thighs

Geometric · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

Two people sit side by side, each showing a bear head tattoo on the upper leg above the knee. The bears are drawn as faceted, grid-like outlines in thin black lines with no shading. The image is in black and white against a dark brick wall, with the tattoos centred and clearly framed.

"Mind the chalk line, Ada, it's the only thing between us and the ravine," Harold said, and she stepped over it without looking down, the way she had stepped over everything that season.

They had been mapping Crannock Fell for eleven weeks, squaring it into a grid of pegs and string so the county could decide where the new road would go. Each evening they sat on the tailgate of the van and inked what they had measured onto squared paper, and each evening the bear came back. It was not on any instrument. It was in the way the ridgelines folded, the way the scree ran in long diagonals down the north face, the way a slope that looked like a shoulder kept snapping into a snout whenever you took its bearings from two stations at once.

"It's the triangulation playing tricks," Ada said. "Nothing on this hill is shaped like an animal."

Harold didn't argue. He took a fine nib and traced the bear over the contours, one clean black line at a time, and when he had finished he asked her to initial the corner. She refused. In April the county chose the eastern route after all, the one that went around the fell without touching it, and nobody asked why. Harold pinned the sheet above his kettle. Ada folded her copy into her coat. Now, when they meet at the cattle grid on the old drove road, they hold the two drawings up side by side and compare the grids, line for line, and neither of them has ever said the obvious thing, which is that the road went around the bear.
