Geometric cat head on upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cat face is drawn in angular geometric lines, with the facial planes outlined in black. Soft blue, violet, red and orange colour washes spread across the cheeks and ears, and the centre of the face is left as bare skin. The photograph is taken close up at a slight angle, with the arm filling most of the frame against a dark background.

The fiddler stopped the reel because the cat had walked onto the floor, and nobody in the Crown Hall at Little Wenning had ever seen a cat cross the boards during a dance. It sat in the middle of the square, between the Hardcastle brothers and a row of boots, and looked up at the lanterns as if it were counting them.

Old Ada Pyle said it was the same cat that had come in the winter the roof blew off. It had no collar and no owner, and it kept to the place where the light was warmest. Every Saturday after that it took the same spot under the gallery, and the dancers learned to step around it the way they stepped around a loose board.

That night the lanterns had been filled with paraffin that smelled of the sea. The glass threw blue on one wall and violet on the next, and where the sun had gone down through the west window a red and orange wash lay across the floor. The cat moved through none of it. It only turned its head, slowly, towards the empty stool by the door where Ada's husband had played for thirty years before his hands gave out.

Ada lifted the bow and played the stool's tune, the slow one nobody danced to any more. The cat rose, crossed the boards without hurrying, and sat down on the stool. Nobody argued with it. The fiddle went on, and by the second verse the whole hall was moving again, quieter than before, and the stool stayed warm until morning.
