Grey cat with red bandana on forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A large cat face with pointed ears sits centrally on the forearm, drawn with bold black and grey shapes and soft shading across the head. The eyes are yellow with dark pupils, and a red bandana with white polka dots is tied at the neck, with a few red tones in the inner ears. The background is a plain skin tone beside a dark starry fabric, with the top of a second tattoo, possibly an owl, visible at the bottom edge.

Pass me that poker and mind the step, Dan, the flags are iced again. You want Biscuit's story, the one about the beck? Right then. Biscuit was a grey tom with eyes like two brass pennies held up to a lamp, and ears so tall the wind used them for a weathervane. Old Hollin's wife tied a red spotted bandana on him the Christmas he turned a year old, and he wore it the way a magistrate wears his collar, with no shame at all.

That January the beck froze solid from the weir down to the sheepfold, and the ewes stood bawling at the edge of it because the ice was too thick to break and too thin to trust. Young Tom Hollin went out with a bucket and an ash stick, and Biscuit went out ahead of him, trotting along the bank with his tail up like a flag. He stopped where the ice had gone grey and wet, sat down squarely on it, and would not be shifted by any amount of coaxing or cursing.
Tom knelt, put his cheek to the cold, and heard a bleat coming up through the ice. A ewe's lamb had gone through a soft patch under the bank and was clinging to the shelf with its nose just clear. Tom tied the bandana to the fence post so the place would be marked, then wound his scarf round his wrist and hauled the lamb out by its fleece. Biscuit never once looked at the water. He just sat there, blinking those brass eyes, until the lamb was safe in the straw.
So that's why the red cloth hangs on the nail by the dresser, and why nobody in this valley walks the beck in January without a stick and a cat for company. Drink your tea now.
