Fine red linework spirals, a flower outline and solid green and orange circles form a geometric tattoo across both forearms.

Geometric circles and spirals across forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo spans both forearms and combines thin red linework spirals, concentric rings and a line-drawn flower with solid green and orange circles. A red outlined triangle sits near the wrists. The fine lines are crisp and the filled circles are flat and even, set against pale skin with a dark wire grid background.

"That's how you know the ground's ready," she said. "Things that spin come home."

I did not believe her, but I had spent the whole of June on my knees between the runner beans and the leeks, so I was willing to believe nearly anything that wasn't the council letter under the watering can. It had a small red triangle printed in the corner, an arrow pointing at the words Notice to Quit. Nan had gone over it in biro, round and round in rings until the paper tore.

We sowed the sunflowers that afternoon in rows so straight the neighbour came over to check them. Nan knelt on a folded feed sack and pressed each seed in with her thumb, counting under her breath. Forty-one. Forty-two. The marrow leaves had gone the colour of old glass, and the sun sat low and orange on the shed roof.

In October the first heads opened, big as dinner plates, and every seed inside had arranged itself in the same tight spiral, clockwise, then back again. Nan laughed until she had to sit down on the step. The council man came the following week with his clipboard, looked at the heads for a long time, and went away without writing anything down.
