Geometric circles and triangles on ribs

Geometric · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A woman's side and ribs show a black and grey geometric tattoo made of a large ring with a central dot, a small key-like line, a solid triangle and an outlined triangle, and a trail of dots and small circles. The linework is clean and the dots are stippled, giving a soft shaded effect against the skin. The subject is shown from the side against a blurred sandy backdrop, with the tattoo as the clear focal point.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The surveyor's daughter kept her father's instruments in a box lined with green baize, and the best of them was a brass ring with a single pin at its heart. When the river flooded the valley of Essel, the old man was sent up the hills to find the true line of the boundary stones, and he took her with him because she had quick eyes and no fear of goats.

They camped where the ground broke into shelves of pale sand. Each morning he set the ring on its tripod and sighted through it, and each morning the pin cast its small shadow on the brass, and each morning he frowned at the number he wrote down. The boundary, he said, had moved. Someone had taken a stone in the night and put it back a finger's width further in. She asked who would do such a thing. He said the same people who always did, and that the river was only honest because it had no interest in land.

On the sixth day she laid a triangle of dry reed across the sand, then another pointing the other way, and drew a line from the ring's pin to the point where both met. The line was short. The old man looked at it for a long time, then walked the hill's edge and found the stone exactly where her line ended, pushed in under a drift of sand, its face turned to the river. He never said she was right. He only began calling the place Quick Eyes Shelf, and he left the brass ring in her box when he died.
