Balloons and rabbits on an upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Several outlined balloons float above three small rabbits, each rabbit hanging from a string. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a reddish-brown or dark purple. The design runs diagonally down the upper arm against a plain black sleeve, and the lower rabbit is partly cut off at the edge of the frame.

Dear Nell,

The frost has got into the top field again and the ewes are standing about looking put out, so you'll forgive the smudges. Your mother says I'm not to write you a list of chores, so instead I'll tell you about the balloons. Mrs Pike's grandson brought three from the fête on Saturday, red and grey and one that had gone soft, and he tied them to the gate post while he went to find his dog. Then the wind came round from the north and the balloons lifted, and the rabbits that Mr Pike had tethered to the strings for a joke came up off the stone wall as well, all three of them, kicking like they'd been asked to swim.

We watched them from the yard, the lot of us. They went over the hedge and past the Dutch barn and I lost them over the beeches. Mrs Pike swears she saw the lower one, the fat one with the bow, settle on the roof of the church, but she also swears the vicar is a Methodist, so I'd not put much stock in it.

Here is the part you'll like. This morning there was a tin of carrots on the back step, and nothing else. No note. I've left it out again tonight, with the lamp lit in the scullery so whatever's up there can find the way down. Your grandmother used to say the things we lose in winter only ever come back in spring, and I've decided to believe her, though I'm too old to be waiting up for rabbits.

Love, Grandad
