Geometric cube and colour blocks on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A forearm carries an abstract geometric tattoo made of overlapping solid blocks in blue, teal, pink, orange and yellow, with a cube-like form at the centre. Thin black outlines trace some of the shapes and extend across the design, and the blocks have a soft, painted finish. The arm fills the frame against a flat teal background with a subtle dot pattern.

Dear Tomas, the mule drover came through on Tuesday with the last of the cases, and I have stacked them in the lean-to behind the chapel where the snow can't get at them. You will laugh at what is inside. Forty tins of pigment from Lyon, blue like a cold lake, a teal, a pink the colour of the inside of a shell, orange, and a yellow that hurts to look at before breakfast. Father Anselm asked me to paint the new border markers for the pass, the ones that tell the carters where the road is when the cairns are buried.

I have been thinking about Berthe's cellar, where she kept her preserves in square jars stacked three high, each one dyed a different colour because she could never afford clear glass. I tried to draw the markers that way: a solid block, then another tipped off its corner the way the light falls over the ridge at four o'clock. The outlines I kept thin and black so a man on a mule can read them through fog. The colour I laid on with a sponge, dabbing, so the faces look wet.

Here is the strange part. When I finished the fourth marker and stepped back, the blocks seemed to slide out of the rock and sit on the pass itself, as though the mountain had been waiting for someone to name its shapes. Anselm said they looked like a dropped box of sweets. I told him that was the point.

I will bring the last panel down when the road opens in June. Keep the kettle on.
