Rainbow hexagon on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A hexagon made of faceted triangular sections fills most of the frame, with each section shaded in a different colour, moving through red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. The shading is soft and gradual within each facet, giving a dimensional, crystal-like look. The tattoo sits on a pale forearm near the wrist, centred on the skin, with a dark sleeve at the left and a light wall behind.

Sit down, love, and mind the drip stand, it has a temper. You want to hear about the hexagon? Forty years I worked nights on Ward Nine, and the first thing they showed me was the glass in the east window. Sister Mabel had it hung there, a cut-crystal thing the size of a man's fist, six faces and a point at every corner. Nobody knew who gave it. It had been on that sill since the building was new.

Every morning at a quarter to six the sun came up over the car park and found that crystal, and the ward filled with colour. Red on the ceiling tiles, then orange sliding down the curtains, yellow on the trolley, green on the old man's blanket in bed four. By the time the day shift came in, purple was pooling in the corner by the sluice door. The porters used to say the ward got painted before breakfast.
One February a new registrar, all clipboard and no sleep, decided the glass was a fire hazard and had it boxed up for the cupboard. That night nobody could settle. Bed four kept asking for his window back. The little lad in bay two woke every hour, crying that the room had gone grey.
So I fetched a torch, climbed on a stool and found the box. I hung the crystal back on its thread myself, and I told the registrar she could argue with the sun if she liked. Then I sat with the boy and waited. At quarter to six the light came through. He sat up, pressed his hand flat into a patch of blue on the blanket, and said, "It's coming back to me."
