Geometric dog outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A black linework tattoo shows a seated dog in profile, built from angular triangular facets rather than curved lines. The thin, even outline is filled with a lattice of smaller lines, giving a faceted, origami-like effect. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the tattoo sits centrally on the ankle with white trousers and a tan boot framing it.

The ferry put us ashore at the wrong jetty on Skerrie, so Uncle Tam and I walked the cliff road with the wind shoving at our backs and a dog made of paper riding in my coat pocket. Tam had folded it at the kitchen table the night before, creasing a square of brown wrapping paper into facets and pinching the ridges until a seated dog looked out at nothing in particular. "Sheepdogs sit like that when they're waiting for a whistle," he said. "Never when they're tired."

Fly, the collie we had come for, belonged to the Mackinnon place at the top of the hill. Nobody had seen her in four winters, not since the old shepherd died and the flock went to market. The gate hung open on one hinge. We found her in the byre, grey at the muzzle, sitting exactly the way the paper dog sat, one foreleg lifted as if someone had just asked her a question and she was deciding whether to answer.

Tam knelt in the straw and held out the folded dog. Fly sniffed it, then looked at him the way she must once have looked at a whistle. I expected tears from him, or at least a long silence, but he only said her name, and she stood up and shook the straw from her coat. We carried her down the hill in the back of the van with the rain drumming on the roof, and the paper dog went back into my pocket, its ridges gone soft from handling.

Tam is buried above the jetty now, with his cap on the stone. Fly lies beside him under the same wind. The paper dog sits on my windowsill, facing the water, and when the light comes through the creases it throws a little lattice of shadow across the sill, as if the dog had finally found somewhere to rest.
