Geometric elephant head on a thigh

Fine line · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A single-line style elephant head, built from angular fragments and overlapping outlines, fills most of the outer thigh. The linework is thin and black, with soft grey dotted shading along the inner edges of the ears and around the eyes. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with the trunk running down the middle of the leg against a plain pale background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Brother Anselm had been told the elephant on the gatehouse was a mason's joke that stayed only because nobody could afford to chisel it out. He climbed the scaffold anyway on the morning the frost came off the moat, a bucket of lime hooked on his wrist, and looked at it properly for the first time.

It was not one carving. It was a dozen, fitted over each other like the pieces of a broken plate: the ears laid across the cheeks, the trunk running down the middle of the arch in a line that never quite met itself, the tusks cut from some older wall that had fallen in the siege. Where the stones had split, the mason had left the cracks as lines and let the lines do the work. The old men in the village said the carver had come up from the coast with a cart of rubble and no name, and had gone back down the road with the cart full of coins and no thanks.

Anselm rubbed the dust from one of the eyes with his thumb. The grain beneath was pale and cold, and the shadow in the ear hollows was a scatter of tiny dots, made with a point and a patient hand. He thought of the wall the carver had taken the stone from, and the families who had lived behind it, and how the mason had refused to make one clean animal out of their ruin.

He climbed down, mixed his lime, and filled the crack beneath the trunk. He left the elephant's lines alone.
