Fine line geometric diamond design on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A bare upper back shows a centred fine line tattoo of overlapping geometric diamond and kite shapes, with two small dots above. Dotted lines hang from the lower points, ending in small solid diamond pendants. The linework is thin and black with no shading, and the design sits in the middle of the back between the shoulder blades, with striped black and white fabric visible at the lower edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Surveyor of Caldrenmoor never trusted a map he had not flown. So every spring my grandfather walked the kites up the cliffs above the salt flats, a pair of diamond frames bound in waxed linen, their tails hung with a dotted chain of knotted cord and a small black bead at each end. The chain told him the wind. The beads told him when to stop, because a bead that clicked against the frame meant the kite had reached the height he had paid for.

I was twelve the spring the kite did not come down. It drifted over the Hollin estate and kept climbing, its two dots of paint like eyes above the peak, until the wind dropped and the cord went slack. My grandfather said a kite that refused the ground had found a better map. He sent me after it with a lantern and a basket of bread, and I followed the trail of the bead chain through three fields and a flooded lane.

At dawn I found it snagged on the chapel roof at Sennet Cross, the diamonds bent but whole. Under the eaves, pinned by a rusted nail, was a sheet of paper in a hand I did not know, a surveyor's sketch of our own valley with a single point marked in ink. Beside it someone had drawn the chain again, and beneath the lowest pendant, in small letters, were the words: this is where you stop.

I carried the sheet home and laid it on my grandfather's table. He looked at it for a long time, then folded it into his coat and went out to the cliffs without his boots. We never found the place on the paper, but the next spring he flew the kite to the same height and no further, and when the bead clicked against the frame he simply sat down in the grass and let the cord run out through his fingers.
