Nested circles and triangles on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black line tattoo on the side of the ribs shows a large open circle with a pointed triangle and a smaller nested circle and triangle at its lower left. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The design sits centrally in the frame, with a hand and dark fabric at the top left edge.

Dora Pell had called the Thursday dance at the Co-operative Hall for nineteen years, and in all that time she had never once told the room what a figure was for. She chalked it on the boards instead, the way her mother had: a wide ring, a point drawn off the rim like the corner of a sail, and tucked where the sail met the curve, a smaller ring with its own small triangle. Dancers read the chalk and went where it said. Nobody asked why the lines bent the way they did.

Tonight the hall smelt of wet wool and Brylcreem. Eddie Marsh had come up from the docks for the first time since his wife died, and he stood at the foot of the set with his hands in his pockets, as though he expected to be sent home. 'Circle of eight, then the sail,' Dora called, and the harmonium and the fiddle, which never agreed on a key, lurched into the tune. The ring turned. Three couples peeled off the rim, wheeled into the point, and slid down into the little circle at the corner, where Eddie, without being asked, stepped into the gap they had left.
By the last turn the fiddle had dropped out and the set stood in a ring so tight the dancers could hear each other breathing. Eddie found his place without looking at the floor, the way the chalk had told him to. Dora watched from the stage and thought of the line she had drawn at the start of the night, which ran out of the smallest circle and past the edge of the boards, onto the bare wood, as if the figure had never been meant to stop inside the hall at all.
