Pink faceted gem heart with lace border

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large heart shaped like a faceted gemstone fills the centre of the design, with pink and red facets and white highlights and sparkles across its surface. A black ornate lace or filigree border with scalloped loops surrounds the heart. The shading is smooth and blended in the gem, the outline is bold and even, and the skin around the piece is softly lit against a dark sleeve at the left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The heart stone came out of the sea wall at Porthkennick on the morning the tide went out further than anyone could remember. Old Ansel Trewhella swore it was a ruby, and he would have sold it on the spot to the first man from Penzance if I had let him. I was sixteen and I kept my hands in my apron pockets and said nothing, because the stone had gone warm against my palm and I did not want anyone else to feel it.

My mother ran the lace shop on Quay Street, and she knew the lace-makers who sat in the doorways of the chapel on wet afternoons. They wove their bobbins in circles and loops, the way the sea wears a pebble, and when I showed them the stone one of them, a widow called Marnie Pascoe with a mouth like a drawstring, took up her pins and began to stitch a border around it. She said a gem without a frame would roll off the edge of the world. It took her eleven days. Every loop was a little knot of something she had lost, and she told me the names as she worked, though I never learned whether they were the dead or the drowned.

On the twelfth morning the lace was finished and the stone sat inside it like a sealed letter. I went down to the wall to give it back to the sea, as the old rule required. The tide was coming in fast and the gulls were quarrelling over a dead crab. Then I saw the light inside the stone flicker, the way a lamp does when someone opens a door in another room, and I understood that it had never been a ruby at all. I put it in my pocket and walked home, and it has been there ever since.
