Isometric cube within an inverted triangle
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A black outline drawing of an inverted triangle enclosing an isometric cube, with the cube's top face and internal edges drawn in clean, uniform strokes. The lines are solid black on a plain off-white background, with no shading. The design is centred and symmetrical, with the cube's bottom point meeting the lower apex of the triangle.

The foreman brought the sheet back to my bench on a Friday, which was how I knew it had gone wrong. Mr Harrow never returned work on a Friday unless he had already decided who was to blame. He laid it flat under the gas lamp and tapped the lower point with his pencil. 'Corner down,' he said. 'The cube sits on its corner and the triangle holds it up. Show me where the weight goes.'

I had drawn it the way my father taught me on the Tyne ferries, every line the same weight, the ruling pen dipped twice and wiped on the cuff. Nothing shaded, nothing guessed. The top face rose to meet the two slanting edges of the frame, and the hidden seams inside it gathered at a single point over the middle, exactly where a man would set his thumb to lift it.
'Then it's a hatch,' I said. 'The lid of a coal chute, lifted from underneath. The triangle is the frame and the point is the hinge.' Harrow looked at it for a long time. Out on the slip a riveter started up, and the whole office hummed with it, the drawing boards shivering on their trestles.
He took the pen from my hand, drew one extra stroke along the base of the top face, and wrote my initials under it, not his own. 'They'll argue about that line in Newcastle,' he said. 'Make sure it's your name on the argument.'
