Simple outlined diamond design

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

A single faceted diamond drawn in thin black outline on a plain light grey background. The linework is uniform and clean, with a flat table at the top, angled facets on the crown and a pointed base. The composition is centred with generous empty space around the motif, and the image uses only black and grey.

The trough has frozen solid again by the time you get out to it, and Dad's hands are too stiff to work the hammer, so you take it from him without a word. The yard smells of diesel and wet straw. Ice cracks under your boots like the lid of a tin. He has been talking about the ring since Tuesday, the small gold one his mother wore, which slipped off in the cold while he was feeding the ewes and which neither of you has found since.

You walk the field edge in widening rings, the way he taught you, eyes down into the stubble where the frost has furred every blade white. Crows lift off the hedge and settle again. The sun is low over Hallam's Wood and it throws everything long and pale, so every stone and bottle top shines. Twice you stop and crouch and your heart lifts, and twice it is only a split flint or a scrap of tinfoil from the shepherd's lunch.

By the gate you find something under the frozen gutter of the old greenhouse: a shard of glass, faceted along one edge where the pane broke, its corner catching the light in a point of white and grey. It is nothing. Still, you turn it over three times, and each time it flares the way the ring must have done on his finger.

When you get back to the yard he is still crouched at the trough, breath smoking, shaking his head at you before you have opened your mouth. You don't tell him. You slip the glass into your coat pocket, where it knocks against your keys, and you hand him the hammer. The ice gives on the first blow.
