Two overlapping triangles on an upper arm
Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The photo shows a black outline tattoo of two overlapping equilateral triangles, one pointing up and one slightly offset below it, on the outer upper arm. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the ink is solid black. The arm fills the frame against a dark background, with a striped vest sleeve on the right.

By the third reel the chalk had worn off the boards, so old Tam Ferrier knelt at the door and drew the marks again with a stub of lime. One triangle pointing up, for the men who had come in from the byres. One pointing down beneath it, for the women who had come in from the mill. Where the two shapes crossed sat a small lozenge of floor that belonged to nobody, and the rule of the Hogmanay Hall was that any pair who met in that space had to dance it out to the end.

Nobody remembered who made the rule. Ishbel Crae, who played the fiddle with her eyes shut, said it was older than the hall and older than the parish. She also said the lower triangle had been shifted a finger's width to the left one winter, so the overlap sat a little off true, and that was why couples who met there never quite agreed about anything afterwards. Tam only grunted and told her to play.
The year the miller's boy came to the hall, he stepped into the lozenge on the first beat and would not step out. Ishbel's bow kept going, the floor thumped, and a girl from the upper farms, who had said she would not dance at all, crossed the lime and took his hand. They turned until their boots smudged the chalk and the lines were gone from the boards.
Next morning Tam drew the marks again, a finger's width further left, and left the overlap open for anyone who wanted it. He did not look at the floor that time. He looked at the door, waiting to see who would come through it.
