Geometric mountain range on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a mountain range is drawn in thin black outline on the side of a foot, near the arch. The peaks are built from straight, angular lines and triangular facets, with a few internal lines suggesting shading. The ink is black only, and the tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a soft, warm, out-of-focus background of bokeh lights.

Sit down by the range, pet, and mind the teapot, it's been stewing since the Coronation. You'll have heard of the summer the boarding house on Crescent Terrace took in a surveyor's widow called Irene Pell. She arrived with one trunk and a theodolite wrapped in a tea towel, and she said she had come to measure the cliffs for the harbour board.

Every evening she sat at the end table with a sheet of squared paper and drew mountains. Not the sea, mind. Peaks, sharp ones, each slope split into triangles like a cracked windowpane. Mr Gosling from the chandlery told her the nearest mountain was in Wales and nothing like so tidy. She said she wasn't drawing what was there. She was drawing what the land would look like if it had been made by someone who was very good with angles.
On the last night of August the wind came off the water hard and the parlour lamps went out one by one. When we lit the candles the paper was gone from her table. In its place someone had pinned a single line of ink to the skirting board, a range of peaks no longer than a hand, running out toward the door. Irene had packed her trunk and gone on the first tide. Nobody saw her leave, and the theodolite was never claimed.
