Single line mountain range on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a continuous single line forming a mountain range, with a tall central peak and two smaller peaks, ending in short dots at each side. The linework is thin and even, drawn in solid black ink with no shading. It sits horizontally across the inner forearm against a plain, dark blue-grey background.

Nineteen days out from Valparaiso, the lookout bellowed that there was land, and you did not believe him until the grey smudge on the horizon sharpened into three peaks, the tallest in the middle, the other two leaning in like mourners at a graveside. Captain Hesketh came up the ladder with his spyglass still warm from his pocket. He said nothing for a long while, which was how you knew it was real.

The chart in the chartroom showed open water where those mountains stood, a blank the cartographer had never bothered to fill. You sat with your pencil over it and remembered Mr Ferrier, the old navigator who taught you that a coastline drawn in one unbroken stroke was honest, because it said you had passed that way without lifting your hand from the work. So you drew the range that way, climbing from the west, lifting over the high peak, dropping to the notch, rising again to the small shoulder, and finally running out flat to the east. At each end you put a dot, where the land gave up and the sea took over.
That night the wind dropped and the ship hung in the swell. You stood at the rail and watched the peaks go from black to grey to nothing, until you could not be sure they had ever been there at all. Hesketh came and stood beside you with a cup of tea gone cold. He asked whether you meant to tell the owners, and you said you would tell them only that the land was where the charts had lost it.
By morning the mountains were back, sharp against a pale sky, exactly where your line had put them. You wrote the entry in the log in your own careful hand: land sighted, bearing north-east, three peaks, as drawn. Then you went below for the first time in a week and slept like a man who has finally finished a line.
