Geometric outline shapes on two forearms

Geometric · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms show black outline tattoos built from angular, box-like shapes that loosely resemble a vehicle or a building. The linework is clean and even, with flat areas of red filling a single block in each design. The photograph is taken close up against a dark background, with the designs spread across both arms.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marta had built the house to fit the cart, and the cart to fit the road, and the road did not care for either. At the gate at Vell the guard measured it with a hazel stick and said it stood a hand too tall for the arch. He was not unkind about it. He only asked what was inside, and she told him it was a house, and he asked whether a house could cross a border, and she said that depended on the border.

She could have left it at the gate. Her grandmother had said a house was only a house until someone sat down in it. So Marta unpinned the roof, the only part with any sense of a chimney left, and laid it flat on the cart bed like a lid. Then she lifted the walls off their pegs one at a time, the plain grey ones and the one panel she had painted with a single square of red lacquer, the colour of her father's door in the hill village. The guard watched her stack them. Behind him the queue of carts grew, and nobody sounded a horn.

When the walls were down there was nothing left but the frame, the bare cart and its wheels, and the guard stepped aside to let it pass. Marta walked beside it through the arch with the roof on her back. On the far side a woman waited with a child on her hip, looking up at the empty frame as if it were a doorway she already knew.
