Marta had worked the footbridge crossing for nineteen winters, and she knew the sound a tin made when it was passed too quickly over the iron rail. Tonight the river ran high and brown under the lamps, and the guard on the far bank had already turned his back to light a cigarette.

The man waiting on her side was called Tomasz, though he had given her a different surname in the spring. He held his hands cupped together, as if he were carrying water, and she had seen that shape before on people who had nothing to declare but their nerves. She leaned over the rail and set a wrapped loaf into his palms, still warm from her own oven, with a folded paper pushed into the crust. His fingers closed over hers for a moment longer than they needed to.

"Ninety seconds," she said. "Then you are a stranger again." He nodded, and the paper rustled as he slid it inside his coat. Marta walked back along the path without looking round, the way her mother had taught her, and the lamp above the crossing buzzed like a trapped wasp.

In the morning she went down early to check the rail. The loaf was gone, and so was the paper. Sitting on the cold iron where his hands had rested was a black button shaped like a heart, the kind she sewed onto the coats of children who were leaving. She had not put it there. She picked it up, weighed it in her palm, and slipped it into her apron pocket.
