Cat head outline with red nose

Mixed · Photo

A cat head in a single black outline with pointed ears, whiskers extending from both cheeks, and a small filled red nose. The linework is even but slightly hand-drawn in character, and the design sits in the centre of a close-up frame on warm skin. The only colour is the red nose against the black ink and pale skin tone.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Put another peat on the fire, child, and stop fidgeting with that cup. The cat was called Sgian, after the knife old Murdo used for gutting, and he was the only creature on Eilean Beag who never once looked afraid of the sea.

The February the Mary Ann went out and did not come back, the lamp on the point failed at dusk. Murdo's wife, Catriona, stood on the rocks with her shawl over her head and cried into the wind. Sgian walked past her, tail up, straight down to the water's edge, and sat there with his face to the dark, washing one paw as if he had all night.

Catriona went after him because there was nothing else to do. The cat stopped where the tide had left a line of kelp, and when she came close she saw a faint light bobbing out past the skerries, low and steady, coming home. Sgian turned and pressed his cold nose into her palm, once, the way he did when he wanted his supper, and then he trotted back along the shore toward the lighthouse as though the matter was settled.

The Mary Ann came in at first light with one oar gone and Murdo asleep across the thwarts. Catriona said the cat had led her home. Murdo said the cat had only wanted his breakfast. And that, child, is why on the coldest mornings you will find a cat's head drawn in the frost of every window on this island, ears pointed, whiskers out, and a little red mark where his nose pressed. Now drink your tea before it goes cold.
