Geometric skull and faceted heart on the feet

Geometric · Other · Colour · Photo

The left foot shows a skull built from angular shapes, shaded with soft gradients in purple, blue, green, yellow and pink. The right foot carries a heart made of sharp, faceted panels in red, pink and dark maroon with black accents. Both designs sit on the top of the feet against a pale blue sheet, with painted toenails visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The glassmakers of Harrowmere did not carve their dead. They set them in faceted stone and let the light do the mourning. My grandmother said this was why the old gods stopped visiting: there was nothing left in the village that could be cut without breaking.

When the tide-bell rang for Ysolde Marrand, her two sons carried her down to the shingle on a board of driftwood. The elder, Tobiah, had painted a skull on the sole of her left foot the spring before, in ochre and cobalt, because she had asked him to and because the travelling mender had shown him how the colours could blend like weather over a hill. The younger, Pell, had drawn a heart on the right, cut into angles like the ice that forms on the cistern edge, red as the last pomegranates from the south ships.

Nobody in Harrowmere could say what the skull was meant to hold, only that it glowed brighter when the lamps were lit, and that when Ysolde walked the lanes her bare feet left a trail of small coloured sparks on the warm stones. Pell said it was because she had walked too far for both of them. Tobiah said nothing, but he kept the paint jar under his bed.

On the third night they buried her with her feet bare to the sea. In the morning the tide had drawn back and left two faceted stones at the water's edge, one clouded with blue and green, one the colour of a plum. The children took them home and set them on the windowsill, where they still catch the lamplight and throw it across the floor like something trying to walk.
