Geometric symbol flash sheet
Geometric · Colour · Flash
The image shows rows of fine gold linework symbols on a plain black background, including chevrons, triangles, crosses, an eye, arrows and angular glyphs. The lines are thin and even, and the symbols are spaced in grids with a dotted divider separating two groups. The single ink colour and the strict layout suggest a flash sheet of design options rather than a photograph of skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The clerk at the Harrowgate cattle fair kept her flash sheets pinned inside a tin box, and she would only show them to customers who had lost something. Old Tobiah Rudd came to her on the last Sunday of the fair with a cough and a bag of silver he had won at the coconut shies, and he asked for the sheet with the eye in it. She turned the pages slowly. The chevrons pointed the way home, she told him, and the triangles were for keeping a door shut when you needed it shut. The crosses were for crossroads, which were never the same twice.

He bought the design with the eye, and asked for it inked on the inside of his wrist where he could see it when he counted coins. The artist worked in the back of a caravan with the flap tied open to the wind, and the gold ink went in thin and even, line after line, while a barker outside sold the last of the toffee apples. Tobiah talked the whole time about his brother in Leeds, whom he had not written to in nineteen years, and the artist said nothing except to ask him to hold still.
When the fair packed up on Monday, the caravan was gone before anyone noticed, and Tobiah was found on the Leeds road with his sleeve pushed back and a letter in his fist. It was addressed in a hand he did not recognise, and it had only one line: the arrow points the way you already came. He read it twice, then turned his wrist over and began to walk.
