Geometric wireframe shape on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black line tattoo of an overlapping wireframe cube and angular diamond shapes runs down the inner forearm. The lines are thin and even, with no shading, and the drawing is set on a pale arm against a dark background. A second person's hand holds the wrist, and a convention wristband is visible at the lower left.

Mavis had counted the rafters of the Palais three times before the band struck up, and each time there were twenty-two, which was wrong, because the drawing in her pocket said twenty-one. Her uncle Ray had measured the hall for the council in pencil and tracing paper, and he had been careful. She had been careful too. Still, the hall kept adding one.

She pressed the folded sheet flat against the cloakroom counter while the girl behind it sorted coats. The lines were thin and even, a wire cube hung over a fan of diamonds, and when she looked at the corner where two faces met, the near side turned away and became the far side, the way a staircase does when you stop trusting it. Ray had called it the lantern. He said it was the only honest thing he had ever drawn, because it showed you the frame and nothing else.
Dancers went round under the glass globes. A tall lad in a borrowed jacket asked her for a quickstep and she said yes before she could think about his shoes. As they turned, she noticed the floor was laid in black tape, a grid of the same wire lines, and the grid shifted each time the band changed key.
She stopped in the middle of the floor. Nobody bumped into her. They simply went around, the way water goes around a stone. Then she understood what Ray had never said outright: the cube was not a shape at all but a way of agreeing where you stood. She took the pencil from behind her ear and drew one more line on the tracing paper, from the corner of the lantern to the edge of the page, and the hall settled at twenty-one rafters.
