Geometric triangles on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman's forearm shows a small tattoo of two interlocking triangles, one outlined above and one solid-filled below, forming a diamond-like shape. The linework is thin and black, with the lower triangle shaded in dark ink. The hand rests on a belt against a pale background of a desert landscape and a flat rooftop, with silver rings and bangles in the frame.

The row ran eleven trees short of the boundary wall, and Ada Pryce would not let the men plant the twelfth until she had measured the gap twice with her chain and once with her eye. Her father had laid out the orchard by a rule he never wrote down, so she had to work it backwards from the apples.

By the last week of August the Bramleys were heavy and the wasps had found the windfalls. She drew the plot on squared paper at the kitchen table, pencil sharpened with a bread knife, and saw that the trees made two triangles laid point to point: one standing upright on the slope with its base along the lane, and one inverted beneath it, its shadow falling across the barn at noon. Where the two met was a diamond of bare earth that nobody had ever planted.
Her father came in from the packing shed with his cap in his hands and asked what she was doing. She told him the diamond was the place the orchard had been keeping for something. He laughed, then stopped laughing when she showed him the sums, which were right, and which he had never once got right himself.
They planted a single quince in the diamond that October. It fruited the following autumn, small and hard and yellow, and the pickers said it was the only tree on the farm that never needed picking twice.
