Small geometric finger tattoos with gold rings
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are held together with the fingers close to the camera, showing small black geometric tattoos on several fingers. The marks include a cross, chevrons, dots, short vertical lines and a triangle, drawn with fine, simple linework. Thin gold rings sit on the fingers, and the pale, soft-focus background keeps attention on the tattoos.

The Palais on Marine Parade had a cloakroom code nobody wrote down. Mrs Okonedo, who kept the coats for thirty years before me, marked each brass tag in indelible pencil, and the marks were the only record of whose tweed belonged to whom. A cross meant the owner had stepped outside for air and would be back for it. Chevrons meant the coat was a loan. Dots counted the pints promised at the bar. Short upright lines were for people who had gone home without telling anyone.

The night the band played 'Moonglow' for the third time, a boy in a suit two sizes too big slid a tag across my counter. It had a triangle on it, point up, and beside it a row of little dots. He asked me to hold his coat until Sunday. I had never seen a triangle. Mrs Okonedo had taken the ledger home to Ramsgate the week before, and I was left with nothing but the pencil and my own guesses.
I guessed he was a sailor, because sailors always wanted their coats kept until Sunday. I guessed the triangle meant a ship. I hung the coat on the third hook from the end and turned the tag to the wall so the dance-floor lights wouldn't catch it. Sunday came and the boy didn't. Nobody else asked for that coat either, so I kept it.
Last month, clearing the back room for the new owners, I found Mrs Okonedo's ledger tucked inside a hatbox. The triangle was on the very last page, with a note in her small hand: a sign for someone who would come back for what they left, when they were ready. Under it she had drawn one more dot, as if she had been counting. I put the coat over my arm and went out into the rain to find him.
