Geometric unicorn head on a calf
Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A unicorn head in profile is built from angular facets, with its mane and horn in solid black. The lower body fades into fine stippled dotwork shading, and small triangular fragments trail down and away from the neck. The design sits on a calf against a plain white background, with a bare foot visible at the bottom of the frame.

The dome above the Haverley Palais had been a unicorn once, or so the brochure said, its head thrown back in a sheet of leaded glass that caught the chandeliers. Mabel Crane had been up the ladder since six that Tuesday, lifting out the grey facets one at a time with a putty knife, and the mane came away in pieces as if it had never been properly set. Below her, the foxtrot carried on, a trombone sliding wide over the floor.

Joe from the boiler room held the ladder and said it was the bandsman's fault, the one who swung his instrument like a scythe. Mabel didn't argue. She had watched the fractures spread across the lower neck for a month, fine lines like frost on a pond, and she knew the glass wasn't weak so much as tired of being asked to hold still. She sorted the shards into a biscuit tin by the three shades the maker had used: slate, dove and a black so dense it swallowed the light.
When the last waltz finished she found one more piece caught in the hem of her overall, a sharp triangle of dove-coloured glass from the trail that fell away from the unicorn's shoulder. She turned it over under the lamp. One edge had a burr where the lead had pinched it, and a tiny bubble sat in its heart like a held breath. None of the dancers had seen it come loose, and nobody would miss it.
She carried it home along the wet promenade and set it on her windowsill, where the streetlamp passed through and laid a small grey triangle across the lino. By morning the light would have moved, and the shadow with it, while the unicorn stayed on its dome, broken into a hundred useful pieces and still running.
