Geometric wolf in mandala on lower back

Geometric · Back · Mixed · Photo

A geometric wolf head sits at the centre of an ornate mandala, with fine dotted and lined patterning around its outline. Its face is built from faceted grey shading, with teal tones on the eyes and muzzle. Below, strings of beads hang with feather and leaf-like charms, and the composition is framed by the curve of the lower back.

The wolf came down from the hill the week the rain would not stop, and it came to the market at Thornmere because the stall-keeper's daughter had left the back gate open. Nobody saw it cross the cobbles. They only saw the stalls begin to shift their weight, the awnings bellying with water and the leeks in their crates going soft at the edges.

Old Amara Pell had sold dreamcatchers from a trestle under the clock for forty years. She made them from willow she cut herself, bound with waxed thread, and every hoop had a ring of little beads strung on it like the drops gathering on her hat brim. Her wolf was carved into the centre of each one, a face made of angles, the way frost makes patterns on a window. People bought them for children, for the sickbed, for the door of a new house. She never asked what they dreamt of.

The wolf stood at her trestle that afternoon, wet to the shoulder, and looked at the feathers hanging from the frames as if counting them. "You have been making mine," it said, "and not once have you made a web that holds anything." Amara laughed, because it was raining and there was a wolf at her stall and she was tired. Then she saw the wolf was not joking. Its eyes were the green of the river under ice.

She took down the smallest catcher she had, the one with the teal thread, and hung it on the wolf's ear. "Keep the bad ones out," she said, "and let the good ones through." The wolf considered this for a long while. Then it turned and walked back up the hill into the grey, the feathers and beads swinging behind it like a clock pendulum waiting for someone to wind it.
