Geronimo bow tie and Allons-y 3D glasses
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The top panel shows the word geronimo in a typewriter-style serif, with a red bow tie in solid fill below it. The bottom panel shows the handwritten word Allons-y above a pair of 3D glasses with blue and red lenses, plus several small star shapes. The linework is bold and clean, with flat fills and no shading, and the photos are taken close up on the inner forearm.

In the old wing of St Aldric's, the night porter Walter Penhale kept a key to the linen store that nobody else had. Every night at ten past three the lifts stopped answering and the corridor lights dimmed to the colour of weak tea. The nurses said it was the boiler. Walter said nothing, because his grandmother had told him that people who talk about the lights are the ones who get lost in them.

One night a student nurse called Ivy Sorrel came up from the ward with a drip stand and a wrong turn. Behind a fire door she found a tall blue cabinet no wider than a wardrobe, with a lamp on top and no sign at all. Walter was leaning against it with his cap in his hand. 'Hold the door,' he said, 'and don't trust the clock, it's lying.' Inside, the floor went on further than the walls did. Through a window that had no business being there, Ivy counted eleven stars.
Walter put a pair of cardboard glasses with one red lens and one blue on her nose. Through them the dark corridor turned into a sky, and the stars stood out in lines she could follow. 'Read the dark like a chart,' he said, 'then jump.' She asked where they were going. He tugged his bow tie straight, took a breath, and shouted 'Geronimo!' into the cabinet, and the floor dropped away like a lift with no cable.
They were back before the kettle boiled on the ward. Ivy was never sure how long they had been gone. Walter gave her the glasses to keep. 'Allons-y, next one,' he said, pulling on his cap, and went back to his rounds. Ivy still keeps the glasses in her drawer, and she checks the clock whenever a fire door sighs open.
