Matching sisters heart tattoos on inner forearms
Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two inner forearms are pressed together, each showing an identical heart-shaped infinity loop with the word sisters written in script inside it. The left heart has a grey ribbon and the right has a purple ribbon, both with black outlines and a small heart dot. The close framing and soft, even lighting keep the focus on the matching linework and colour.

Gather close, you who came in out of the rain, and mind the fire, for this is the tale of the two dyers' daughters of Sidon, who never once in their lives agreed on the colour of anything.

Their father kept two vats at the harbour's edge, one for the murex shells that gave the purple, a stink you could taste a street away, and one for the ash-grey wool the herders brought down from the hills. Ysolde, the elder, wanted purple on every cloak in the city. Her sister Nessa, who had the steadier hands, thought grey was the honest colour and would not be talked out of it. They quarrelled over those vats the way other families quarrel over inheritance, loudly and every morning, until the neighbours set their clocks by it.
One autumn a ship limped in with a cracked mast and a sailor who had no coin, only a strip of ribbon knotted into a loop that had no beginning and no end. He said his mother had taught him to fold a strip so it made a heart and then ran on forever, and that whoever wore it would never be parted from the one who held the other end. The sisters laughed at him. When he had gone, they sat up all night with a single strip between them, Nessa dyeing one half grey and Ysolde the other half purple, and neither would let the other finish alone.
By morning they had two ribbons, each the loop of the other, and they never sewed them together. The old women say the ribbons are still worn by anyone who has quarrelled with a sister and come back to the vat. Now you know what the ribbon is for, so take the end of the story home with you and mind the stairs.
