The bbright orange, teal and pink colours sit against pale skin, with dark tattoo shapes visible at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Crumpet had gone off his biscuits somewhere past Barstow, and by the time the Ford's air conditioning gave up on the long straight towards Baker, he had made his position clear. He sat on the passenger seat with his whiskers pushed flat by the wind from my open window, staring at the heat shimmer as if it owed him money.

I had collected him from Aunt Mavis's bungalow in Redlands after the funeral, with a cardboard box of tins, a litter tray that rattled, and a note in her round hand: He only wants toast. Butter it thin, never wet. I assumed it was a joke. It was not a joke. Every morning I bought a sliced white loaf from the rack by the petrol station till, and every morning he sat on the dashboard and regarded the bread as though it were a letter from someone who had let him down.

Outside Amboy the road went blank. There was nothing but creosote bush and a Texaco sign turning slowly on its pole. I pulled onto the gravel, toasted two slices on the little camping grill, and buttered them with the care Mavis would have approved of. Crumpet ate one corner, then the other, then climbed onto the bonnet and settled himself facing the horizon, ears forward, eyes half closed.

I sat beside him on the warm metal and didn't ask what he was thinking about. Mavis had always said a cat's thoughts were his own business. Whatever it was, it was clearly gold, and clearly worth a long wait in the sun.
