The sign had been bolted to the gate of the old tram depot for eleven years, and nobody in Coldharbour Lane had ever once read it properly. Dez Okonedo read it every morning on the way to the bakery. GIRAFFIC PARK, in pink letters that had faded to the colour of cheap sweets, with a long dark-necked animal peering over a sun that had also given up. The council wanted the depot gone. The council did not know about the giraffe.

She was in the back of the van with Priya and a flask of tea gone cold when the gate finally swung open at quarter to six. The night watchman, Mr Hollis, was a man who liked crosswords and hated surprises, and Priya had spent a fortnight buying him a crossword book he had not asked for. He waved them through without looking up from the grid. Behind the gate, under the sodium lamps, the old tram shed was lined with tall green stilts of painted wood, each one with a head nodding over the rails where the trams used to stand.

They had been building them in secret since March, one a weekend, out of hardboard and broom handles and a stolen sheet of fencing. Nobody on the estate had asked why the depot smelt of wallpaper paste. Dez climbed the last ladder, pressed her palm to the giraffe's painted cheek, and felt the damp of the morning come off it.

By the time the council surveyor arrived at nine, the whole shed was full of animals looking out over the cordon tape, and the sign on the gate had a new line underneath, in careful pink capitals. CLOSED FOR REPAIRS. ENQUIRIES TO THE GIRAFFE.
