Giraffic Park logo tattoo

Mixed · Photo

A green giraffe head and neck sit in front of a red sun inside a cream outlined badge, with the words GIRAFFIC PARK in pink lettering across the lower band. The design uses bold solid fills with thin dark outlines, and the flat colours are set against a close crop of skin with no body part clearly visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The giraffe was meant as a gift for the governor of Napata, but by the time the caravan reached the river it had eaten two cloaks, a basket of figs and the top of a reed fence. Tamit's father, who had walked beside it all the way from the grasslands, said the beast only wanted to see over things. The overseer said that was exactly the trouble with it.

They penned it behind the granary with a mudbrick wall the height of two men. Within a week it had its head over the top, looking out at the river with the sun coming up red behind its ears. Tamit carried it water in a clay jar and told it the names of the things it could see: the reed boats, the palm groves, the tax men in their white linen. The giraffe listened, as far as anyone could tell, and then went back to eating her hair ribbons.

The governor came in the dry season with scribes and an empty cart. He stood at the gate and looked up, and up, and the giraffe looked down at him with the patience of something that had seen taller men. Tamit was told to speak. She said the gift had been meant for a king, and kings did not keep wild things in pits. The governor laughed, then stopped laughing, because the scribes had begun writing everything down.

The next flood took the wall. The giraffe walked out along the bank towards the pale hills and was never caught. The village still calls the flat ground beyond the granary the Park, though nothing has been kept there since, and the children who climb the broken wall to look out say the sun is always red when they do.
